Fitness in the off season!!

SLSMNC is pleased to announce an initiative to keep our members engaged, active, and fit throughout the Surf Lifesaving off season by partnering with AFL North Coast.

Over the past months I have held discussions with Paul Taylor, Football Operations Manager for AFL North Coast and we have come up with a proposal to offer each of our sporting groups members the opportunity to cross over into each others sport during our “off seasons”.

As our Surf Life Saving Junior members season draws to a close in the next couple of weeks, the AFL season is about to begin, with their recruitment and sign up days commencing soon. AFL’s Junior season commences on the first weekend of April and extends to the last weekend in August.

It is hoped MNC Clubs and the Branch can promote this initiative which in turn will be promoted in a similar way through the North Coast AFL Clubs towards the end of their season.

Attached is a flyer promoting www.play.afl as the best point for people to locate an AFL Club nearest them.

I look forward to the prospect of both AFL and Surf Lifesaving gaining more members through this cross over opportunity and keeping our members engaged in positive environments and activities all year round.

Please do not hesitate to contact me for any other information

Regards

Gary Hawkins

Joanne Hawkins - SLSNSW 2015 Administrator of the Year!!!!

Clubbie Crowned Top Administrator

Joanne Hawkins from Wauchope-Bonny Hills SLSC celebrated her tenth year in Surf Life Saving in spectacular fashion by taking out Administrator of the Year at the 2015 NSW Awards of Excellence in Sydney on Saturday.

It may have been her family that brought her to the surf life saving community as Joanne joined after seeing how much fun her son was having as a Nipper, but it’s passion that has kept her involved.

Joanne earned her Bronze Medallion in 2010 and in the 2014/15 season contributed over 50 hours as a patrolling lifesaver playing her part in ensuring that people who found their way to the beach on the state’s scenic Mid North Coast were well protected.

But it’s the hundreds of hours behind the scenes at branch and club level that has earned Joanne this recognition.

This season Joanne served as Director of Administration for the Mid-North Coast Branch of Surf Life Saving as well as Junior and Youth development coordinator within the member services team of Mid North Coast.

As part of her role there she assists in the coordination of the development programs and is an active facilitator.

“I think people become involved and stay involved in surf life saving because they love it,” Mrs Hawkins said after receiving her award.

Communication plays an important role in her positions within the branch and she finds herself busy as an online moderator on multiple Facebook groups.

For the last two seasons she has organised the successful Mid North Coast Branch Presentation evenings and is on the branch constitution committee.

“For me personally I enjoy everything in my roles at both club and branch level – I really enjoy the communication side of things that I have started to do as it gives me a chance to build and strengthen relationships with other clubs throughout the branch,” she said.

Joanne has also taken on a mentoring role in supporting people from other clubs believing it strengthens the movement.

“What I find really gratifying is helping clubs attain the accreditation that they need to do to ensure they meet all the requirements.”

Ray McDonagh SLSNSW 2015 Official of the Year!!!!

South West Rocks Stalwart Earns Official Gong

For Mid North Coast surf sport athletes the friendly face of Ray McDonagh is a familiar sight at local carnivals, but now his achievements are being acknowledged by a much wider audience with him being named the 2015 Sports Official of the Year.

In a year where among other achievements he received his 50 year badge of service, Ray also served as an official at Rescue 14, the NSW State Championships, The Aussies and the NSW IRB Series. He also attended and served at every branch carnival around the Mid North Coast, and continued to serve his club however it was required.

The classic road trip song, “Hit The Road Jack” could apply equally to Ray McDonagh’s travels throughout the 2014/15 season. In his position as Branch Director for Surf Sports he clocked up 1400 km for meetings, and an additional 600km attending various carnivals.

“It’s really an honour to achieve this award. I’m really pleased that we have been able to increase the number of officials on the Mid North Coast and it’s great to be part of their journey. Officiating is really like a family as you spend so much time together at the various carnivals,” a clearly delighted McDonagh said on Saturday.

Underpinning Ray’s unquestioned determination is a fierce desire to improve the surf sport experience for competitors, officials and spectators. He is keen for more athletes to become involved, particularly the younger ones and last season helped to implement an innovative Tri Series Competition between the Lower North Coast, Mid North Coast, and North Coast branch.

Ray is also keen to mentor the next generation of officials, and thanks to his efforts numbers have actually increased in the Mid North Coast branch.

“I have a number of programs in place for next season so my hope is they’re bigger and better than even. What I really love about being an official is helping members be able to achieve all their goals in surf sports, it’s important to not lose sight of it,” he said.

Ryan Rosenbaum Awarded For Innovative Public Safety

Australian Lifesaver of the Year, Ryan Rosenbaum, has been awarded the Australian 2014 Young Public Safety Innovation Award.

The award recognises and rewards young Australians who have demonstrated an innovative design improving public safety.

Ryan has been involved with the inception of two key processes that have improved the performance and service delivery of surf life saving emergency service first responders including the establishment of the first external Lifeguard Service in NSW to utilise the SLSNSW radio network as well as assisting in the development of text messaging services for duty officers increasing the call out capability during emergencies.

Accepting his award in Melbourne in front of many of his emergency service peers, Ryan praised surf life saving.

“I’m so happy to be recognised for such a prestigious award. I couldn’t have achieved any of this if it wasn’t for the unwavering support from Surf Life Saving NSW, my branch as well as my club, Tacking Point SLSC. The opportunities within surf life saving are endless and the support is there for whatever you want to achieve,” he said.

While the official lifesaving season has concluded, Ryan has a busy schedule during the offseason including attending the National Drowning Prevention Summit and SLSNSW State Lifesaving Conference and facilitating a number of courses including the RWC course, Silver medallion and Duty Officer Workshops.
